The last conversion . . .

Martin Luther once said:
“There are three conversions necessary: the conversion of the heart, the conversion of the mind, and the conversion of the purse. But for many of us, this is often the last thing to change.”
Why do you think it is so hard to us to surrender our finances to God?

Why does money have such a power over us?

What breaks the hold of money so that we can live in line with God's will and way?

  1. Generosity breaks the hold of money... it is a discipline to do it, and needs to be worked at as God opens up the opportunities. The reason money has such a hold is that there is a spiritual reality backing it, so we are giving allegiance to something other than God, which is never a good idea! It is perhaps hard to surrender our finances because part of the deceit of Mammon is that we will be asked to give up everything and live a life of poverty, wearing dowdy clothes, eating courgette all year round and not even living in a tent. This is not like the generous God I know, but he does encourage us to give away at his prompting, and we can expect that to become softer and softer as we grow spiritually mature and should be able to discern his heart.
